Modern Cordless Power Tools

Carrying out a DIY task or building project is easy with the use of power tools. Powered tools are safe, accurate and efficient, and so allow you to complete your work quickly and effectively. There are a wide range of powered tools now available to for your toolbox, each with their own unique features and benefits. Many lightweight portable tools are battery operated and therefore allow you to work freely in and around your workspace.

The past
Some people are put off buying battery powered (or cordless) tools because they believe they simply cannot deliver the same consistent levels of power as corded tools. This may once have been true as battery powered tools in the past typically used Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) batteries as their power source. NiCad batteries only delivered consistent power for a brief period of time, and therefore two or more batteries charging at the same time were needed to provide anything like enough juice to get a job done.

The future
By contrast, today’s modern cordless tools have far more power and longer running times because they are powered by Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Aside from improved performance, Li-on batteries make cordless tools even more lightweight because they are significantly lighter than NiCad batteries. Overall, this creates a far more powerful and economical cordless tool. Should Li-ion technology keep evolving at such a pace, then it is quite conceivable that smaller, more powerful Li-on batteries may eventually eliminate the need for corded tools altogether…
